Your family is your rock—the people you should be able to turn to in tough times, but also the people who probably turn to YOU for the same reason.

But did you know? There are ever-widening “circles” of family that require various levels of attention—starting with your inner circle: specifically your spouse and kids. The next circle includes in-laws, perhaps a favorite aunt or uncle you’re close to, and even your ex, if you’re still on friendly terms. But the furthest circle out—the outliers—are cousins, ex’s you don’t speak to, and others you don’t really keep track of.

The key is to prevent the two outer circles from becoming a source of drama for your immediate “inner circle” family.

If you’ve got toxic family members outside your immediate family, realize that YOU setting boundaries and dealing with the issue makes your close family circle safer and happier for your spouse and kids. Working on your marriage (instead of your divorce) will ensure that your home life is tranquil and supportive.
